Root canal treatment in Jordan Springs and Penrith

Root canal treatment saves a tooth whose nerve has become infected or has died. The nerve is removed, the canals inside the root are cleaned and sealed, and the tooth stays in your jaw doing its job. It has a reputation for being the worst thing in dentistry, and that reputation belongs to the toothache rather than the treatment — most people arrive in pain and leave out of it.

What's involved, step by step

Our modern, specialized process relies on digital precision to optimize your clinical results.

Working out which tooth and why

About 30 minutes

Testing the tooth's response to cold and to pressure, and an X-ray of the root. Sometimes a 3D scan where the anatomy is unclear or a canal is hard to find. Not every painful tooth needs a root canal, and this appointment is where that's decided. You get the plan and costs in writing first.

Cleaning out the infection

60 to 90 minutes

Done under local anaesthetic with a rubber sheet isolating the tooth. The nerve chamber is opened, the canals are cleaned along their full length and disinfected. Most of the pain relief happens here. An antibacterial dressing and a temporary filling usually go in at the end.

Sealing the canals

One further visit

Once the tooth is settled, the canals are filled with a rubber-based material and sealed so bacteria can't get back in. Simple single-canal teeth are sometimes finished in the first visit instead.

Protecting the tooth

Two visits, a few weeks later

A root-treated back tooth is brittle and will split without cusp coverage, so a crown or onlay is normally made. This is separate treatment with its own cost, and it's the step that decides whether the root canal lasts.

Recovery & Aftercare Guide

Recovery and aftercare

Most people notice the original pain settling within a day or two. The tooth is usually tender to bite on for several days afterwards because the tissue around the root tip is inflamed, and that eases on its own. Over-the-counter pain relief handles it for nearly everyone. Antibiotics are not part of routine root canal treatment and won't fix the problem on their own — the infection lives inside the tooth where antibiotics can't reach it.

The first few days

Expect tenderness when biting, easing over three to five days. Chew on the other side while the temporary filling is in. If the temporary comes out, ring us rather than waiting for the next appointment.

Occasionally a tooth becomes more painful or swollen a day or two after the first visit. This is a known reaction, not a sign the treatment has failed. Call us — it's managed by reopening and dressing the tooth, and sometimes antibiotics.

A back tooth that's had a root canal and only a filling has a real chance of splitting, and a split root usually can't be saved. Having the root canal and then skipping the crown is the most common way this treatment is wasted.

Risks and things to consider

Root canal treatment is successful in the large majority of cases, but it isn't certain. Infection can persist or return, and the tooth may need retreatment, a small surgical procedure at the root tip, or removal. Canals can be narrow, curved or calcified, and occasionally one cannot be fully cleaned to its end. A fine instrument can separate inside a canal and sometimes has to be left there. Perforation of the root wall is uncommon but possible. The tooth is more brittle afterwards and can fracture, particularly if it isn't crowned or if you grind. A tooth that was already cracked before treatment carries a poorer outlook, and we can't always tell how far a crack extends until we're in there. Some teeth darken over time after root treatment, which is more noticeable on front teeth. A flare-up of pain or swelling between visits happens in a small number of cases.Where the anatomy is complex, or where a previous root canal has failed, referral to an endodontist may give a better result and we'll say so rather than attempting it here.

Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner. Individual results vary.

Who you'll see

Root canal treatment here is carried out by Dr Michael Kozman. Where the anatomy is complex, or a previous root canal needs redoing, we'll tell you at the assessment and arrange referral to an endodontist. For sedation, a visiting sedationist attends and monitors you throughout.

What affects the cost

The main factor is which tooth it is. A front tooth has one canal and a back molar can have four, so the time involved is very different. Whether it's a first treatment or a retreatment of a previous root canal makes a large difference, as does whether the canals are straightforward or calcified. A 3D scan is only taken where it's needed and is charged separately. The crown afterwards is separate treatment with its own fee, and we'll quote both together so you can see the real total rather than just the first half of it.

Common questions

Is it painful?

The treatment is done under local anaesthetic, so you'll feel pressure and vibration but not pain. The pain people associate with root canals is the toothache that brought them in, and that's what the treatment removes.

No. Antibiotics can settle swelling for a few days, but they don't reach inside the tooth where the infection lives. The problem returns as soon as they stop.

Usually two, occasionally three if the infection is stubborn. Some straightforward single-canal teeth can be completed in one.

Because a root-treated back tooth is brittle and splits under normal chewing forces. The crown is what makes the root canal worth having done.

You can, and sometimes that's the right call. But the gap then usually needs filling with an implant or bridge, which costs more than the root canal and crown would have. We'll give you both figures.

Most root-treated teeth that are properly restored last many years. Nobody can promise a figure for an individual tooth — how long it lasts depends on the crack history, the restoration and how you use it.

The options are retreatment, a small surgical procedure at the root tip, or removing the tooth. We'd explain what we found and what each would involve before you decide.

Root-treated front teeth sometimes darken over the years. It can be managed with internal whitening or a crown or veneer if it bothers you.

Yes. We offer happy gas, oral sedation and IV sedation. It's a common choice for longer molar appointments.

Usually not. Most people go back to normal activity the same day, allowing for a numb lip for a few hours.
