IS A DENTURE RIGHT FOR YOU?

Dentures are often considered when

The right option depends on how many natural teeth you have, the health of your gums and the bone underneath, and what matters most to you: comfort, appearance, cost or how the denture stays in place. We examine your mouth and talk through the options before anything is made.

What's involved, step by step

A new denture is made over several appointments, so the look and fit can be checked along the way.

Assessment

First visit

We check your mouth, gums and any remaining teeth, and talk about what you want from your denture.

Written plan

Before any work starts

You receive a written plan with the options, the number of appointments involved and an itemised quote before any work starts.

Impressions and fittings

Over a few weeks

A new denture usually takes several appointments over a few weeks, including a try-in so you can check the look and fit before it's finished.

Adjustments

First few weeks

New dentures often need small adjustments in the first few weeks as your mouth settles. We book follow-up visits for this.

Care & Maintenance Guide

Looking after your dentures

Most people need a few weeks to get used to eating and speaking with a new denture, and small adjustments during that time are normal. Gums and bone change shape over time, so a denture that once fitted well can become loose or start rubbing. Have your dentures and mouth checked regularly, even if you have no natural teeth left.

Daily care

Clean them daily with a soft brush and a denture cleaner. Regular toothpaste can scratch them. Take them out overnight and keep them in water or a soaking solution so they don't dry out. Brush your gums, tongue and any remaining teeth too.

A reline reshapes the fitting surface so the denture sits closely against your gums again. If a denture is chipped, cracked or a tooth has come off, bring it in and we'll check whether it can be repaired or needs replacing. Please don't try to glue or adjust a denture at home. Household glues and filing can damage it beyond repair and irritate your gums.

Book a visit if your denture feels loose, causes sore spots or ulcers, makes it hard to eat or speak, or is chipped or cracked. Ongoing sore spots should always be checked rather than left.

Things to consider

Dentures take some getting used to. Eating and speaking usually feel different at first, and sore spots are common in the first few weeks while the fit is adjusted. A denture rests on the gums, so it won't feel or grip quite like natural teeth. Over time the gums and bone underneath shrink, so dentures need relining and eventually replacing. A partial denture that clips onto natural teeth makes those teeth harder to keep clean, so careful brushing and regular check-ups matter. We'll go through which of these apply to you before you decide anything.

Other options worth considering

A removable denture isn't the only way to replace missing teeth. These are the main alternatives we'll talk through with you.

Implant-supported dentures

Clip onto dental implants instead of resting only on the gum. Surgery is involved.

Implant Dentures

Dental implants

A fixed replacement for one or more missing teeth, placed in the jaw.

Dental Implants

A bridge

Fixed, but the teeth either side are prepared to support it.

Crowns and Bridges

Common questions

Answers to the questions we're asked most about dentures, relines and repairs.

Can you fix my old denture instead of making a new one?

Often, yes. Many dentures can be relined or repaired. If yours is worn out or no longer fits well even after a reline, we'll explain why a new one may be the better option.

It varies from person to person. Most people need a few weeks to get used to eating and speaking with a new denture, and small adjustments during that time are normal.

Yes. Regular checks let us look at your gums and the soft tissues of your mouth, and check that your denture still fits properly.
