Haven't been to the dentist in years? Here's where to start

It’s one of the most common things people tell us, usually with an apology. You don’t need one. Plenty of people put it off because of cost, a bad experience, or simply life getting busy. This page explains what happens when you come back.

You're not the only one

Dental fear and long gaps between visits are very common. Most people who come back after years away say the hardest part was making the booking.

What the first visit involves

Step 01

A conversation first

We ask what worries you and what you’d like to get out of the visit. If you just want a look and an honest picture, that’s fine.

Step 02

A gentle examination

We check your teeth and gums, take x-rays if needed, and show you photos on screen so you can see what we see.

Step 03

A plan in writing

You leave with an itemised plan, starting with anything urgent. Nothing is booked until you’ve decided.

How treatment is usually ordered

Urgent first

Pain, infection and anything likely to get worse quickly.

Then stabilise

Gum treatment and fillings to stop problems progressing.

Then rebuild

Crowns, bridges, implants or dentures, if they’re needed, once things are stable.

If you're anxious

Tell us when you book. We can take things slowly, agree a signal for stopping, and use happy gas, oral sedation or IV sedation with a visiting sedationist. Many people find a longer appointment under sedation gets more done in fewer visits.

Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner. This page is general information only and not a substitute for an examination. Individual results vary.
