The Child Dental Benefits Schedule, explained

Many families are eligible for government-funded dental care for their kids and don’t realise it. The Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) covers basic dental services for eligible children. Here’s how it works.

Who's usually eligible

Services Australia checks eligibility each calendar year. A child usually needs to be all of the following:

What it covers

Check-ups and x-rays

Examinations, x-rays and cleaning.

Treatment

Fissure sealants, fillings, root canals and extractions.

Not covered

Orthodontics, cosmetic dental work and services in hospital.

How the benefit works

The CDBS has a capped benefit amount over two consecutive calendar years, starting from your child’s first eligible service. It’s easy to lose track, so we check your child’s eligibility and remaining balance before treatment. You can also check it in your Medicare account through myGov.

Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner. This page is general information only and not a substitute for an examination. Individual results vary.

Common questions

Usually not. Eligibility is assessed automatically, but it’s worth checking in myGov or asking us to check.

No. Orthodontics isn’t covered.

Any further treatment in that two-year period is charged normally. We’ll tell you before anything is done.

Yes. We’re open 8am to 5pm on Saturdays.
